The French Taiwan Studies Project

French Taiwan Studies Project is the result of a collaboration between Taiwan Ministry of Education, the CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique – French National Center for Scientific Research) and the EHESS (École des hautes études en sciences sociales – School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences). It was created on the initiative of Samia Ferhat, researcher at the Centre for Studies on Modern and Contemporary China (CECMC) and lecturer at Paris Nanterre University. The project aims to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on Taiwan’s history, society and culture.

A multidisciplinary approach

The project is structured around different learning tools:

  • The seminar, 8 sessions that take place every year at the EHESS
  • The website, which collects various documents and works about Taiwan studies
  • The organisation of scientific workshops, activities and events, in cooperation with both French and foreign researchers
  • Fieldwork grants, awarded to students who are enrolled in the seminar and conducting research on Taiwan

This project was the subject of a memorandum of understanding between the Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, the CNRS and the EHESS, signed on 21 October 2017. (Photo credit: Bureau de représentation de Taipei en France – Taipei Representative Office in France)
